Because the gripper is a physical frame with a set geometry, the maximum pipe diameter it can encircle is fixed. Push beyond that diameter and the gripper simply will not close.
The PipeCut Infinity 2.0 uses a continuous chain that wraps around the outside of the pipe. The chain adapts to the pipe circumference rather than being constrained by a rigid frame. There is no upper diameter limit because the chain length, not a fixed frame, determines what the machine can grip. The lower threshold for the Infinity is 360 mm (14.2 in) OD, which is where the Pro Series reaches its ceiling.

Both families cut steel, stainless steel, plastic, copper, aluminium, and multi-layer pipe. Neither machine is suitable for cast iron or ductile iron when used with the Cut and Bevel package (see the accessories section below).
Setup time and operator workload in practice
The gripper-unit machines are faster to set up on smaller-diameter pipe. You place the gripper, close it, and the machine is ready to run. The orbital path is predetermined by the frame, so there is no chain alignment step.
The Infinity chain takes slightly longer to position on the first use because the operator wraps the chain around the pipe and connects it. Once the technique is learned, the process is repeatable and consistent. On very large-diameter pipe, the chain approach is actually simpler than any alternative, because there is no alternative fixed-frame machine that can reach those diameters.
Both machines are portable and designed for on-site operation without a fixed support structure. The cold-cutting process produces no sparks and no open flame, which removes hot-work permit requirements in many facilities.
Cut quality and repeatability at large diameters
Both product families produce straight, square cuts that are ready for joining without secondary dressing. This is a direct outcome of the guided orbital cutting path: the blade travels around the pipe at a fixed angle rather than being steered freehand.
At large diameters, maintaining squareness becomes more critical because any angular error translates into a larger gap at the joint face. The chain mechanism on the Infinity maintains the same guided cutting geometry regardless of diameter, so cut quality does not degrade as pipe size increases. This is the key advantage of a chain pipe saw over freehand methods such as angle grinding or flame cutting on large-diameter work.
Applications where Infinity is the only realistic choice
- Large-diameter water mains. Municipal water infrastructure frequently uses pipe above 460 mm OD. A fixed-capacity gripper machine cannot open to that diameter, so the Infinity chain mechanism is the only powered orbital cutter that can address the job.
- District heating transmission pipe. Pre-insulated district heating pipe often runs at 500 mm to 800 mm OD or larger. Cutting pipe over 360 mm with a gripper unit is not possible, and freehand methods risk angular error at the weld preparation face. - Process and refinery pipework above 460 mm. High-pressure process lines in refineries and chemical plants require square, burr-free cuts for reliable flange and weld joints. No gripper-unit machine in the Pro Series range reaches these diameters.
- Penstock and hydro pipework. Penstocks in hydroelectric installations are large-diameter steel pipes where dimensional accuracy at cut faces directly affects installation fit. The chain mechanism scales to these diameters without changing the cutting geometry.
- Decommissioning and demolition of large steel pipe. Removing large-diameter pipework in industrial decommissioning requires repeated, controlled cuts. A fixed-capacity machine cannot be used, and freehand cutting introduces safety risks and dimensional inconsistency that the Infinity eliminates.
Applications where Pro Series is the better purchase
